Installation Instructions

@Hand is pleased to now offer support to all handheld device users operating the Palm Operating System (Palm OS) or Windows CE Operating System (Windows CE). Among Windows CE users, there are two types of hardware, hand-held PCs (HPC) and Palm-sized PCs (PPC). These different hardware devices require separate reader programs. Furthermore, among PPC devices, there are two versions of Windows CE available, and each requires its own reader. When you click on the "download reader" icon, you will be presented a list that asks you to specify the reader you wish to download. Installation instructions for each of the readers are listed below:

PALM OS READER AND TITLE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Prior to loading the reader or any individual title, make sure that the PalmOS device is operating properly and the docking cradle is connected to your computer. If you have questions regarding correct use of the hardware, please consult the manufacturer's user manuals.

  1. If you have downloaded your materials from the Internet, locate the PocketClinician folder in which they have been placed. If you are loading from CD or floppy disc, place the medium into the appropriate drive.
  2. Locate the PalmPilot Install Tool in the PalmPilot directory or folder and launch the application.
  3. When the Install Tool has opened, click "Browse": then select the CD, floppy or hard drive folder and locate the file entitled "reader.prc".
  4. Click on Install
  5. A dialog will appear giving you the option to install additional titles. Click "Install Additional File".
  6. Click on "Browse" and select a file name.
  7. Click on "Install". Repeat steps 6 and 7 as needed to load additional titles, noting memory constraints. Note: Titles will load to your Palm OS device in the order that you install them.
  8. When the installation is complete, click "Exit" to leave the install tool.
  9. Synchronize your PalmOS device to your computer.
  10. Once you have loaded your Palm OS device with titles from the PocketClinician LibraryTM, find the @Hand Reader icon in the applications view. The first time you click on the reader icon, you will be asked to enter your first name, last name and the last four digits of your social security number. Take care to enter the data exactly as you entered it during the purchase process on the @Hand web site. The first time you click on an individual book, enter the unlock code you received at the time of the book purchase, and you are ready to begin enjoying the most rapid access available to your important reference data!

 

WINDOWS CE READER AND TITLE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:

    1. Synchronize your hand held device. With a connection established, locate the @Hand reader for your device. If you downloaded it from our Internet site, it will be located on you main hard drive, in the PocketClinician folder.
    2. Double click the appropriate reader.exe file, and the installation will begin. Remember, in order for the program to install, you must have a connection established between your desk-top system and your hand-held device. At the end of the installation program, the installer will automatically load the "title manager" program, and ask if you wish to install individual books/titles. See item 5 below
    3. After installation, the Reader program will be located in the "Programs" submenu on the "Start" Menu" of your device.
    4. The first time you start the reader, it will ask you to register by supplying your first name, last name and last four digits of your social security number. Enter exactly as you entered during the purchase process.
    5. During the installation process, the install program places a folder in you desk-top start menu called "EZ READER" Inside this folder is a desk-top program that manages the INSTALLATION OF INDIVIDUAL BOOK ONTO YOUR HAND HELD DEVICE. When you are ready to install a book(s), connect your device to your desktop and launch the program. The manager will display two columns. The column on the right shows pdb files (books) that are already available on your HPC or PPC. The column on the left shows books on your desktop that are available to be installed. Browse to the PocketClinician folder and the books you have downloaded will appear. Select one or more titles, and click the arrow in the upper left on the install manager's screen, and the installation process will begin.
    6. IMPORTANT NOTE. THE CE READER DOES SUPPORT PLACEMENT OF TITLES ON COMPACT FLASH CARDS. This is accomplished through the "title manager" program. On the title manager program screen, click file and select "add title path". When you select this option you will then be able to browse the CE device and select a folder on the CE device (either in regular storage or in CF storage). Once you select that path, you can send added titles to that path on the CE device. If you look at the right hand side of the manage titles window is the listing of all of the titles on the device FOR THE SPECIFIED PATH THAT IS SELECTED IN THE COMBO BOX ABOVE THE LIST.
    7. The first time you attempt to open a book, you will be prompted for your unique unlock code. Enter the code exactly as you received it during the purchase process.
    8. You are now ready to enjoy the most rapid access possible to important medical reference information.
